Diagnodent is a fluorescent laser that finds cavities (or small developing decay) which lie beneath the surface of the tooth. Studies have proven that there are often cavities that are not detected by x-rays and conventional hand-instruments. Thus, the advanced technology of the Diagnodent provides Dr. Keen with the ability to detect decay in its early stages, when the decay is smaller. Thus, smaller fillings can be performed which preserves a greater amount of your natural tooth structure.
In summary, the early detection of tooth decay beneath the surface allows for a smaller, more conservative filling and prevents the undiagnosed cavities from progressing deeper into the tooth.
