Crowns

All Porcelain Metal Free CrownsOver time, our teeth become susceptible to dental problems such as decay (cavities), cracks, and yellow discoloration. For example, if your tooth has a large old filling and a cavity, or if your tooth is worn down and has a crack, then a "regular filling" may not be sufficient to solve the problem. A crown may be needed to re-establish optimal strength, aesthetics and dental health for your tooth.

Crowns can be made from a variety of different materials: pure porcelain, porcelain & metal alloy, or full-gold. To maintain a natural appearance for your tooth, a porcelain crown is typically the best choice, since it can be matched to the color of your other teeth. Porcelain allows for cosmetic-color-blending, so the crown will appear just like one of your natural teeth.

The process of completing a crown takes about 1-2 weeks. On the first visit, the tooth will be reshaped so that the new crown can be placed over your tooth. Once the tooth has been reshaped, an impression mold will be taken of your tooth. This mold is sent to the dental lab, so the new crown can be created and sculpted. Before leaving the first appointment, a temporary crown will be made for your tooth until your permanent crown is ready.

Crowns take about 2 weeks to make in the dental laboratory. At your second appointment, the new permanent crown will be fitted and cemented onto your tooth. You will again have a local anesthetic to numb the area and the new crown will be cemented permanently using a dental cement. Crowns are durable and will usually last about 10 or more years. You should care for it as you would any of your other teeth with regular brushing and flossing.
